Alpe di Siusi: An Adventure Guide For Every Season

Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm in German) is in the heart of the Dolomites in Italy, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures summer, spring, autumn or winter Alpe di Siusi is the perfect destination for you. It has something for everyone, families, couples, friends & solo travelers will find rest and adventure in this idyllic setting.

Ready for an Alpe Di Siusi holiday? Let’s go!

What Will You See?

Needless to say, the scenery is SPECTACULAR!  If that wasn’t enough, Alpe di Siusi is also home to Europe’s largest alpine meadow.  AND there’s still more! Sitting at approximately 1850m, it is also the training ground for many Olympic athletes from around the world.

Seiser Alm (in German), Alpe di Siusi

Beautiful hikes, rustic mountain huts, and even modern 5-Star hotels like the Alpina Dolomites that offer Finnish saunas and indoor pools are available here!

I ran into the women’s Norwegian cross-country ski team.  My dreams of being BFFs with an Olympic athlete were quickly dashed though – they were in the middle of a training run and flew past us.

Alpe di Siusi offers a variety of activities ranging from hiking, running, biking, climbing and even paragliding. There’s even a race held every year where you can race alongside (OK behind) Kenyan Olympians!

You might want to start off with a cup of coffee first from Valentin Hofer, Italy’s first coffee sommelier.  You’re going to need your energy if you’re going to try to keep up!  On the other hand, I might just stick with hiking, the Dolomites are a hiker’s ultimate playground!

Spring is a magical season in South Tyrol. We see nature awakening from the long winter slumber, brightening the mood and welcoming you outside. Alpe di Siusi comes to life during spring and still offers you diversity when it comes to landscape and activities.

Meanwhile, in the lower areas like Casselrotto, the cherry blossoms start to bloom in early May. One of the most popular destinations for hikers during the spring is the Farm trail of Aica. The trail takes you past beautiful portions of colorful pastures and offers spectacular views of the mountain range.

Be sure to take a warm jacket though as temperatures can still drop pretty low and it isn’t uncommon to get isolated snowfall right into early summer. The cold mountain weather makes Alpe di Siusi a top pick among tourists.

Make sure to stop at the Pond of Fié to enjoy the brilliant waters and the Firs as well as views of the mountains. It is a perfect place to marvel at the colors and smells that spring brings with it.

You can even enjoy some great mountain biking near Mt. Piz where you will probably pass the first rose blossoms of the season. Enjoy alpine pastures as you bike your way up Alpe Di Siusi.

Autumn in Alpe di Siusi

I was lucky enough to hike some of the best trails during a trip there. I stayed at the Dibaita Mountain Hut which had some of the best views of the Dolomites. Autumn is beautiful in the Alpe di Siusi when the foliage begins to change color and the first snow touch the peaks of the Dolomites.

Hiking is great this time of year but make sure to keep a raincoat and jacket as the weather can vary from sunny and warm to rainy and cool.

During the autumn visiting some of the castles and monasteries of the area is popular. There are several main attractions  such as Schloss Bruneck, Castel Presule and Schloss Lebenberg bei Marling that are a must-see during this season. You can also discover restaurants that offer a more contemporary setting as you walk around.

Autumn is also the chestnut season, perfect for some fall snacking as you stroll Alpe Di Siusi of South Tyrol. The chestnuts of the Alpe di Siusi are excellent. The Toerggelen is an annual festival that includes wines, dumplings, and other scrumptious local meals.

A Culinary Experience in Alpe di Siusi

They have such excellent cuisine here. So much so that during my time in the Alpe di Siusi, I took a cooking class at the Gostner Mountain Hut (Gostner Schwaige Seiser Alm) with their chef Franz Muller. It was such a great experience I just had to share it with you as a bonus.

Franz offers cooking lessons at Gostner Mountain Hut, where I took mine. The lessons are offered in German or Italian, but you’re welcome to bring a translator.

The cost is €35-50/person. A minimum of 5 people are required and the lesson lasts 3-5 hours.

Ingredients for Making Dumplings:

  • 200g mushrooms (can also substitute mushrooms for cheese or spinach)
  • 100g onion (cut into small cubes)
  • 240g hard white bread (cut into small cubes)
  • 40g butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 50g milk (can substitute with water)
  • 100g Tyrolean ham (or another type of ham) cut into small pieces
  • Tbs flour
  • A handful of wild herbs (we used parsley, fennel, watercress, mustard leaf)
  • Salad greens (we used flower petals picked from Alpe di Siusi)

Franz the chef who showed me how to make dumplings in Alpe di Siusi

How to Make Dumplings:

  1. Brown the butter then put the onions, bacon, mushrooms, a pinch of salt and the bread cubes into the pan. Cook on medium heat until browned but not burnt.
  2. Add herbs a minute or two before it’s finished cooking and then transfer the mixture to a large bowl.
  3. Add milk, flour and eggs to the mixture.  Stir and leave for 10 minutes.  Meanwhile, boil a large pot of water.
  4. Wet hands and form the mixture into balls.  Squeeze it first, then roll it.  You don’t want any holes.
  5. Boil the dumplings for ~10 minutes
  6. Serve with salad greens
  7. (Optional, but highly recommended) Enjoy your dumplings in the stunning setting of Alpe di Siusi while being serenaded.  Revitalize afterwards with a coffee from Italy’s first Coffee Sommelier or relax in a Hay bath which is an unusual and interesting experience. Delicious meals and beautiful views, what else is there to say?

Why You’ll Love Hiking in the Canadian Badlands. Hint: Dinosaurs

You’ll love hiking in the Canadian Badlands. Not only is it the dinosaur capital of the world, but there are also other-worldly formations known as hoodoos. It’s a unique hiking experience.

t’s an odd feeling to drive across endless prairies and bright yellow canola fields. Then out of nowhere is a canyon with otherworldly rock formations that resemble a moonscape! You’ll love hiking in the Canadian Badlands for sure!

Canola fields near Drumheller, Alerta

Welcome to the Canadian Badlands – a place that couldn’t be more different from my beloved Canadian Rockies if it tried, but is beautiful in its own right! The only other place that is similar in Alberta but not as dramatic in my opinion is Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park.

What the Heck are Badlands and How Were They Formed

As you may have guessed, the Badlands weren’t named by a marketer, but rather by French Canadian explorers in 1743.

The land couldn’t be farmed, used to raise cattle and made travel rather inconvenient, earning it the name mauvaise terre which translates to badlands in English.

Get it? Bad land? Pun intended.
Horseshoe Canyon Drumheller Alberta Badlands

The rocks in the Badlands are as old as 80 million years. They were formed around the same time the Rocky Mountains were forming.

Now flash forward millions of years later to the end of the last Ice Age (12,000 to 15,000 years ago). Huge sheets of ice up to 1 km thick started melting and retreating.

The runoff eroded away the land, creating huge channels and canyons, which are what remain today. They are composed mainly of sandstone and are still eroding today.

The black bands seen in the hills are coal seams creating beautiful scenery.

world's largest dinosaur in Drumheller, Alberta
Now the Badlands are impressive in themselves, but what’s really, really cool, is that they’re a hotbed for dinosaurs. This popular destination in Drumheller is often referred to as the Dinosaur Capital of the World!

It’s also undisputedly home to the world’s largest dinosaur, a Tyrannosaurus rex in downtown Drumheller (60 – 1 Avenue West in front of the Visitor Information Center).

Calling all adventurous people to get a glimpse of just how large this reptile was. As you climb the 7 stories and 106 steps to its mouth, it really is huge. But reality really sets in when you stand with not 1, not 2, but 11 other people in its mouth!

But don’t worry, this is actually 4.5 times larger than a real Tyrannosaurus rex….whew!

Travel Tip: Consider visiting Dinosaur Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located ~175km SE of Drumheller.

Hiking in Horseshoe Canyon

horseshoe canyon drumheller alberta badland-1
The first badlands that you’ll encounter when driving from Calgary to Drumheller is Horseshoe Canyon. It’s about 17km outside of Drumheller.

Horseshoe Canyon is one of the most well-known sites in the entire Canadian Badlands. It’s an isolated coulee in the shape of … you guessed it – a horseshoe!

It’s a steep 60m drop down to the valley floor on unofficial hiking paths. I highly recommend wearing running shoes, or even better, hiking boots with solid soles. Don’t forget to bring hiking poles too.

Once you’re on the valley floor it’s easy hiking. There are no signs so just wander around. I like heading north (left), then gradually making my way back.

Keep your eyes peeled for dinosaur fossils – 16 different dinosaur species have been found in Horseshoe Canyon alone!

You may also see cactuses. This never fails to surprise me – being a Canadian, I’m all too familiar with the looooong cold winters.

Only go when it’s dry as the sandstone is slippery. If you’re visiting in summer, do it first thing in the morning, as temperatures soar up to 40 C!

Don’t make my mistake and wait 3 times before visiting. It’s worthy of a visit on your first time to the Alberta Badlands! The Hoodoos trail is the most popular one here that has 1.4 km of elevation gain.

It gets its name from horse thieves who hid the stolen horses in the Canyon! We had the entire canyon all to ourselves for the first hour we were there.

Similar to Horseshoe Canyon, the view at the top is spectacular, but based on personal experience, I still prefer trekking in the canyon for a unique experience and searching for dinosaur fossils.

There is no official trail so just choose one of the unofficial steeps ones and start exploring! There are a bunch of fun hikes to choose from.

The Hoodoos Trail

Hoodoos in Drumheller, Alberta Badlands
Drumheller is famous for its Hoodoos! The towering sand and clay mushroom-like forms appear as if they are from another world! They are constantly evolving and changing due to the effects of erosion.

You will no doubt see people hiking on them, but please don’t do this! Let the natural elements do the eroding, not your footsteps, and simply enjoy the beautiful landscapes.

The Hoodoos recreation area is ~15 minutes east of Drumheller on Highway 10.

hoodoos in drumheller alberta badlands

You’ll pass the town of Rosedale on the way which is famous for the Rosebud Theatre, a professional theatre company which puts on really good performances.

When I lived in Calgary, I used to drive to see the performances at least once a year! I mean a good show and amazing scenery, why would anyone want to miss that?

Also nearby is the scenic detour of Hwy 10X. It takes you over 11 bridges to the hamlet of Wayne and the historic Last Chance Saloon.

I really enjoyed the drive out there! Fortunately, there was plenty of parking wherever I visited. While I loved the history of the Last Chance Saloon. I found the service and food just OK.

As I listened to other visitors’ conversations. I quickly learned that most 6-year-olds knew a lot more about dinosaurs than I did!

I loved seeing their enthusiasm and exploring the museum through their eyes. A must-visit to let the kids have an adventurous experience!

Not only is it Alberta’s most visited museum, but it’s also home to one of the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs!

The Royal Tyrrell Museum trail is a 1 km long interpretive easy hiking path among hoodoos in the southwest corner of Midland Provincial Park.

Here you can see firsthand how glaciers sculpted 70 million-year-old layers of rock into hoodoos and worldly formations. Again you’re going to want to keep your eyes peeled for dinosaur fossils!

There’s also another self-guided tour through what is left of the remains of the Midland Coal Mining Company, a nod to the area’s once-booming coal industry. Search for dinosaur bones while you’re there.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is at 1500 N Dinosaur Trail, Drumheller, approximately a 7-minute drive from Drumheller.

As you can tell, I’m a huge fan of the Alberta Badlands – it’s not every day that your hiking buddies are huge giants that lived millions of years ago!

But don’t just take my word for it! The Alberta Badlands are cool enough to make an extended appearance in beloved Canadian musician Tom Cochrane’s

I stayed for two nights at the Ramada. The room was a good size, and I appreciated the snazzy coffee machine and microwave in our room. On the downside, we were out the entire day and our room wasn’t cleaned.

It was a bit of a bummer, but not the end of the world. In fairness to the Ramada, I  only notified the front desk the next day when we were checking out so they didn’t have a chance to try to fix the situation.

I was disappointed by the breakfast. Most of it was pre-prepared and there was little choice for celiacs.

Where to Eat in Drumheller:

However, my favorite meal in Drumheller was at upscale Sublime Food and Wine:

While I didn’t eat at the following places, they were also recommended to me by someone who had and enjoyed them: WHIFS Flapjack House (lunch), Bernie & The Boys Bistro and Athens Greek Restaurant.

Know Before You Go to Drumheller, Alberta:

  • The Calgary to Drumheller drive takes about 90 minutes and is 135km. Head north on Deerfoot Trail (Highway 2). Take Highway 72 east through Beiseker, which will become Highway 9. From there, follow the signs to Drumheller.
  • For all of the activities I mentioned above, 2 -3 days is enough time.
  • If you have more time, visit Dinosaur Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located ~175km SE of Drumheller.

Make sure to visit Drumheller and the exceptional badlands. They aren’t that bad! (pun intended).
