Where is Amelia Island?
Amelia Island is part of the Sea Islands chain. The island stretches along the East Coast of the US and is the southernmost barrier island on Florida’s Atlantic coast. The area is well-known for its luxury accommodation, beautiful state parks and miles of white sandy beaches. If you are planning on flying in, the closest airport is Jacksonville International, 24 miles away.

One of the most popular things to do on Amelia Island is horseback riding on the white sandy beaches. It’s the perfect activity for couples and families alike. The two most popular places to go riding is Amelia Island State Park and Fernandina Beach.

Camping on Amelia Island
Peter’s Point Beachfront Park
If you love the outdoors, camping at Peter’s Point is one of the best things to do on Amelia Island. There is nothing better than sleeping under the stars with the sound of the ocean behind you. The best part is waking up to dolphins playing in the nearby surf.
Fort Clinch State Park
You can’t miss a visit to Fort Clinch State Park when you’re in the area. Besides being home to protected dunes, maritime hammock and estuarine tidal marsh habitats, you can also enjoy epic camping here. There are two campgrounds to choose from, the Amelia River Campground and the Atlantic Beach Campground. Each offers you something spectacular.
Kayaking on Amelia Island
Kayaking is a great activity to try out at Egans Creek. It’s a tidal marsh, where salt and fresh water meet, and offers you a great opportunity to see the many diverse plants and animals in the area. Every level of kayaker can enjoy this waterway, and there are plenty of guided tours available too.
Great for all levels of kayakers, Amelia River offers you calm conditions. As with all the waterways on Amelia Island, you’ll see plenty of wildlife, flora and fauna. It’s a great way to get out into nature and experience a little adventure.
Kayaking in Fernandina Beach is one of the most popular things to do on Amelia Island. You’re always sure to see some unique birds and maybe even a dolphin or two. There are plenty of places to launch your kayak or try out a guided tour.

Fishing on Amelia Island
George Crady Fishing Pier State Park
Just 8 miles from Fernandina Beach, the George Crady Fishing Pier is a fun place to go fishing. The one-mile long pedestrian pier has plenty of places to pitch a pole and relax while you wait for the fish to bite. It does get busy, so if you prefer solitude, choose one of the other great spots on Amelia Island.
Fort Clinch State Park
Fort Clinch State Park has a lot to explore, including great fishing. A firm favourite with many visitors and locals is the half-mile pier. It’s the perfect place to prop up your pole and enjoy the scenery. There are also some tours available in the area.

Amelia Island Boat Tours
A trip to Florida isn’t complete without a CraigCat Boat tour. These cool two-person boats are loads of fun for couples and families. You’ll be whizzing over the water as you explore Cumberland Island and the historic Fernandina Beach. This is one of the best things to do on Amelia Island for the adventurous.
Amelia Island Bike Trails
Fort Clinch State Park
The 6-mile route takes you through the forest and over small dunes with some great ascents and descents. It’s a fun trail and a great thing to do on Amelia Island for the adventurer. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to see the many sites that make Fort Cinch so unique. This path is also a great hiking trail if you prefer to explore without a bike. Just make sure to bring plenty of bug spray in the warmer months.
The Timucuan Trail
Located in Amelia Island State Park, the Timucuan Trail is the perfect coastal cycling experience. The 6.3 miles out and back route takes you past salt marshes, sandy beaches and maritime canopies that will leave you in awe. Make your way over the bridge into Big Talbot Island State Park before heading back.
The Amelia Island Trail
This trail stretches from Peter’s Point Beachfront Park to Amelia Island State Park. The 7-mile route offers you stunning views and historic architecture on your way. To make this the perfect day activity, stop at one of the local restaurants on the way for a delicious meal.

Amelia Island Hiking Trails
Little Talbot Island Hiking Trail
This 3.5-mile loop is perfect for every level of hiker. The loop takes you over majestic dunes and past idyllic wildflowers. It’s a popular spot, so if you’re looking for solitude, you won’t find it here.
Fernandina Beach Walk
Great for the whole family, the Fernandina Beach Walk is 3 miles long and dog-friendly. Although it’s used more for walking and hiking, it’s still a great way to explore Amelia Island. You may even get lucky and see some wildlife on your way.
Egans Creek Greenway
This 5.5-mile loop is accessible all year round. This trail is less busy than the others and allows you to appreciate how unique this part of Florida is. The path is easy to hike, making it the perfect family activity.

Amelia Island Adventure Activities
Probably one of the more daring things to do on Amelia Island, hang gliding will get your adrenaline pumping. Enjoy spectacular views of the breaking surf and stunning landscapes from up in the air.
If you’re a beginner, you can check out Fernandina Beach, where you’ll find plenty of surf shops that offer surf lessons. There are also plenty of great spots for experienced surfers, like Main Beach and Amelia Pier.
A perfect activity for the whole family, paddleboarding is the ideal way to spend in Amelia Island. There are some great places to try out including, Lofton Creek, Fernandina Beach and Fort Clinch State Park.
