Ortisei, Italy, is the biggest town in Val Gardena, and the one to pick if you want your Dolomites hiking days to end somewhere with a proper evening.

It sits at 1236 m (4055 ft) in South Tyrol, with a pedestrian center full of shops, cafes and woodcarvers. You’ll also see it called St. Ulrich in German and Urtijëi in Ladin, the same town under three names.

Three lifts leave from town and take you straight into the mountains: the gondola to Alpe di Siusi, the cable car toward Seceda and the funicular to Resciesa.

The 36 hotels in Ortisei below run from 5-star spa hotels to small garni B&Bs, adults-only hideaways, a hotel with its own tennis court and hotels where the trail starts at the door. Each comes with who it suits and where it sits.

TL;DR

The best hotels in Ortisei are Adler Spa Resort Dolomiti for a 5-star spa in the pedestrian center, Hotel Maria for families on the main square, La Cort My Dollhouse for couples, Rainell Dolomites Retreat for hikers and Hotel Albion Mountain Spa Resort if you want your own tennis court.

Center or hillside?

Stay in the center to have the lifts, restaurants and the bus on your doorstep. Stay on the hillside for quiet, views and bigger spa areas, and use the hotel shuttle or the car.

Is Ortisei a Good Place to Stay in the Dolomites?

TL;DR: Yes. Ortisei is one of the best places to stay in the Dolomites if you want hiking straight from town and a lively village to come back to, because the lifts to Alpe di Siusi, Seceda and Resciesa all leave from Ortisei.

What I love about Ortisei is that you don’t need a car to reach the hiking trails. The lifts take you straight into high alpine terrain, where the views are better, so you spend your energy on the scenery and the hike rather than hiking up from the valley.

The gondola from the center puts you on the northern edge of Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest alpine plateau, in about 10 minutes. The cable car on the other side of town heads up toward Seceda and its famous ridgeline.

Getting here without a car is easy too. Take the train to Bolzano, then bus 350 up the valley to Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva. Our guide on how to get to the Dolomites has the airports, trains and buses in full.
