ALPUJARRAS & SIERRA NEVADA GRANADA TOUR: 8-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Trevelez

Welcome to Trevélez, one of the highest villages in Spain, perched at 1,476 meters (4,842 feet) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Its lofty position offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, along with a refreshing mountain climate that has shaped both its culture and economy.

Steeped in history, Trevélez still reflects its Moorish past, with narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses that capture the essence of traditional Alpujarran life. Take your time to explore this peaceful mountain village, soaking in its rich heritage, stunning scenery, and warm hospitality.

And of course, don’t miss the chance to savor some of Spain’s best tapas and its famous “jamón”—cured ham that thrives in the village’s crisp mountain air.

Your Sierra Nevada Granada hiking adventure begins here!

Day 2: Hike from Lobrás – Trevelez

trevelez village in alpujarras regionAfter a 35-minute transfer to the village of Lobrás, you’ll set off on your first hike along the GR7 trail, exploring a lesser-known yet stunning part of the Alpujarras.

The trail gradually ascends across high plains, passing through the villages of Tímar and Juviles, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of deep canyons, the towering peaks of the Sierra Nevada, and the whitewashed villages clinging to the mountainsides.

After an 8 km climb, you’ll begin your descent through a lush forest, making your way back to Trevélez, where you can relax and enjoy the refreshing mountain air after a rewarding day on the trail.

  • Hiking Details: Distance 14.7 km (9.1 miles) Ascent 937 m. (3,074.2 ft.).

Day 3: Hike from Trevelez: Choice of Circular Walks

trevelez trek and ride in andalusian province in spainToday, you have the freedom to choose from three incredible circular hikes, each starting and ending in Trevélez. Whether you’re looking for a challenging summit, a hidden valley adventure, or a rewarding mid-level hike, there’s an option to match your experience and energy level.

Option 1: Mulhacén (3,478m) – The Highest Peak in Mainland Spain

This is a very demanding high-altitude hike, recommended only for experienced hikers with excellent fitness. You’ll take on a steady 8.5 km climb to reach the first of the Siete Lagunas. From there, the challenge continues with a steep ascent to the summit of Mulhacén (3,478m / 11,411 ft.), where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. The long, tough descent follows the Chorrillo route back to Trevélez.

Hiking Details: Distance 22.5 km (14 miles), Ascent 1,904m (6,247 ft.).

Option 2: The Hidden Valley of Noguera – A Remote & Untouched Landscape 🌿

For those seeking a demanding yet less-traveled route, this hike takes you deep into the wild and rugged Noguera Valley, where ancient farms, canals, and remote trails offer a glimpse into the region’s past.

The path is unmarked and challenging, with muddy sections requiring careful navigation (a GPS or navigation app is essential). After an initial 5 km climb, you’ll descend into the canyon of the Noguera River, then tackle a final ascent before heading back to Trevélez. The solitude and raw beauty of this landscape make it worth the effort.

Hiking Details: Distance 16.1 km (10 miles), Ascent 817m (2,681 ft.).

—–

Option 3: The Summit of Peñabón (2,002m) – A Moderate Mountain Ascent ⛰️

If you prefer a moderate-level hike, this steady climb to Peñabón (2,002m / 6,568 ft.) offers a rewarding challenge. You’ll begin by following the riverside trail, before ascending through forested mountain paths to reach the summit. From the top, enjoy incredible views over the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada Mountains. The descent follows a scenic south-facing route, leading you back through the forest to Trevélez.

Hiking Details: Distance 9.3 km (5.8 miles), Ascent 595m (1,952 ft.).

Whichever route you choose, expect a day filled with adventure, breathtaking landscapes, and the unique beauty of the Sierra Nevada in Spain.

Day 4: Hike from Trevelez to Capileira

Today, you’ll set out on the GR7 trail, leaving Trevélez behind as you begin a gradual ascent through pine forests and open meadows. Within minutes, you’ll gain elevation, offering sweeping views of the high Alpujarras region.

After 5 km (3.1 miles) of steady climbing, the trail becomes steeper, crossing high mountain plains before descending into the next valley.

Your journey ends in Capileira, one of the most beautiful villages in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. With its whitewashed houses, lively atmosphere, and excellent local cuisine, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a long and rewarding day on the trail.

  • Hiking Details: Distance 19.3 km (12 miles) Ascent 884 m. (2,900.3 ft.)

Day 5: Hike from Capilerilla: Circular Walk – The Taha villages

After a 20-minute transfer to Mecina Fondales, you’ll begin today’s hike through the Taha villages, a collection of remote, whitewashed hamlets nestled in the Alpujarras.

The trail descends into a dramatic canyon, where you’ll cross an ancient stone bridge before climbing up the opposite side, revealing stunning views of the surrounding villages.

As you ascend along a wide mountain trail, you’ll pass an old farmhouse, before taking a narrow path that winds back down into the canyon.

Your route then leads to Ferreirola, a peaceful, secluded village known for its traditional Moorish architecture and tranquil atmosphere.

From here, you can choose to return to Mecina Fondales via the ancient footpath or an easier, traffic-free road. A transfer will take you back to Capileira, where you can relax after a day of exploring this historic and picturesque region.

  • Hiking Details: Distance 12.7 km (7.9 miles) Ascent 646 m. (2,119.4 ft.)

Day 6: Hike from Capileira and the Bhuddist centre of O Sel Ling

pampaneira trek and ride

Today’s hike takes you on a scenic and spiritual journey through the Alpujarras. Leaving Capileira, you’ll descend to the Poqueira River, before climbing through terraced mountains lined with olive groves on your way to the Buddhist retreat of O Sel Ling.

Nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this peaceful center offers a unique cultural stop where you can visit and take in the serene atmosphere.

From O Sel Ling, you’ll begin your descent to Pampaneira, a lively whitewashed village known for its artisan shops, traditional architecture, and local crafts.

If you prefer a shorter day, you can take a transfer back to Capileira from here. For those looking for a final challenge, you can hike the last 4 km (2.5 miles) back to Capileira, gaining 400m (1,312 ft.) in elevation.

Hiking Details:

  • Full Route: Distance 16.5 km (10.3 miles), Ascent 988m (3,242 ft.).
  • Shorter Alternative (with transfer from Pampaneira to avoid the last climb): Distance 12.5 km (7.8 miles), Ascent 582m (1,910 ft.).

This hike offers a beautiful mix of nature, culture, and panoramic mountain views, making it a memorable part of your Sierra Nevada hiking adventure.

Day 7: Hike from Capileira: 2 Choice of Circular Walks

mulhacen trek and ride in andalusian province in spain

On your final full day of hiking, you can choose between two scenic circular routes, both exploring the dramatic Poqueira River Canyon. Whether you’re looking for a longer, more challenging hike or a gentler route with stunning views, there’s an option to suit your pace.

Option 1: Poqueira River Canyon & Mountain Meadows 🌄

This more demanding hike begins with a 4 km (2.5 miles) trail leading to the old power plant, where you’ll start your ascent into the Poqueira River Canyon.

Crossing the river several times, the trail then climbs out of the canyon, leading to open meadows with spectacular views of Mulhacén and La Veleta, two of the highest peaks in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Passing an old stone shed, you’ll continue upward until reaching an ancient irrigation canal, which you’ll follow along a stunning panoramic trail before returning to Capileira. Keep an eye out for wild mountain goats and diverse mountain flora, both common in this untouched part of the Alpujarras.

Hiking Details: Distance 17.6 km (10.9 miles), Ascent 923m (3,028 ft.).

—–

Option 2: Poqueira River & Village Surroundings 🏞️

For a more relaxed walk, this route also takes you to the old power plant, but follows an easier ancient path, offering a gentler exploration of the beautiful landscapes surrounding Capileira. This is a perfect choice if you  prefer a shorter, less strenuous route while still soaking in the natural beauty of the Poqueira River and its dramatic canyon.

Hiking Details: Distance 9.2 km (5.7 miles), Ascent 421m (1,381 ft.).

Whichever route you choose, you’ll experience the breathtaking beauty of the Sierra Nevada on your last day of hiking in the Alpujarras.

Day 8: Departure Day

After breakfast, your journey through the Sierra Nevada and Alpujarras comes to an end. Congratulations! You’ve hiked through one of Spain’s most stunning mountain regions, exploring rugged canyons, whitewashed villages, and breathtaking landscapes.
