Bellagio is the village on the point where Lake Como splits in two, and the hotel you choose here decides whether you’re looking at that view or sitting inside it.

The old town climbs from the water in stepped, cobbled lanes, with arcaded hotels along the lakefront, villa gardens at both ends and a ferry dock where boats leave for every other town on the lake. It’s the classic first visit to Lake Como, and it earns the reputation.

The Bellagio hotels below run from the only Relais & Châteaux on the lake to boutique hotels up the stepped lanes, apartments with kitchens, and B&Bs and a farm stay in the hills with pools and parking. Each one comes with who it suits, whether it takes pets or children, and how many steps there are between you and the square.

TL;DR

The best hotel in Bellagio is Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, the grand hotel at the tip of the promontory with two gardens, indoor and outdoor pools and a spa. For a spa hotel on the main square opposite the ferry, book Hotel Du Lac & SPA, rated 9.5.

Getting there

Bellagio has no train station. Take the train from Milan to Varenna and the ferry across, about fifteen minutes, or the bus from Como, which takes a little over an hour.

Where in Bellagio

Stay in the old town to be steps from the ferry and the lanes, or in the hills above it for a pool, a garden and free parking.

Book early

Bellagio is the most popular village on the lake, so rooms for May through September 2027 go early.

Is Bellagio a Good Place to Stay on Lake Como?

TL;DR: Yes. Bellagio is the best place to stay on Lake Como for a first visit, because it sits where the lake divides, has the view down both southern arms, and every ferry route passes through its dock.

Staying in Bellagio means having the village to yourself at the ends of the day. In July and August the day boats bring visitors in from late morning, so the trick is simple: be out early, take a ferry to Varenna or Menaggio for the middle of the day, and come back for the evening, when the lanes empty and the lakefront goes golden.

The trade is getting here and getting around. There’s no train, parking is limited and often uphill, and the old town is built on steps, so a hotel near the water saves your legs and one up the hill saves your budget.

If you’re still choosing between towns, our guide to where to stay in Lake Como compares Bellagio with Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzo, Como and Lecco.

Three Bellagio hotels for three kinds of tripFor a once-in-a-lifetime stay: Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, at the tip of the promontoryFor the ferry and the square: Hotel Du Lac & SPA, directly opposite the dockFor a pool and free parking: Villa La Rosa B&B, in the hills a short stroll above townOr search every hotel in Bellagio, and use the map at the end of this post to see where each one sits.

Where to Stay in Bellagio: The Old Town or the Hills Above

TL;DR: Stay in Bellagio’s old town to be on the lakefront, the stepped lanes and the ferry dock, or in the hills above it for a pool, a garden, free parking and a wider view, a ten to fifteen minute stroll from the center.

The old town is the Bellagio on the postcards: the arcaded lakefront along Piazza Mazzini, the dock, and the cobbled stairways climbing between the shops. The Serbelloni, Du Lac, Florence, Hotel Bellagio, Centrale, Seta and La Limonera are all here. Much of it is a limited-traffic zone, so expect to arrive on foot from the ferry.

The hills above Bellagio, toward Villa Melzi and the hamlet of Vergonese, are greener, quieter and easier with a car. Villa La Rosa, Il Colle and Borgo Le Terrazze are up here, with gardens, pools or both, and the lake laid out below. The stroll back from dinner is uphill, which is the small price of the view.

Bellagio Hotels Compared

TL;DR: Of the ten Bellagio hotels here, three have a pool, three have a spa or wellness area, two are adults only, and six take pets.

How to Get to Bellagio Without a Car

A vintage Lake Como ferry, the boat that brings guests to Bellagio hotels from Varenna

TL;DR: Bellagio has no train station. Take the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna, about an hour, then the ferry across to Bellagio, about fifteen minutes, or take the bus from Como, a little over an hour.

The train-and-ferry route is the easy one. Trains from Milano Centrale reach Varenna-Esino in about an hour, the station is a short stroll above the pier, and the ferry across to Bellagio runs through the day. You land on Piazza Mazzini, a few minutes from most of the old-town hotels.

The bus from Como takes the eastern shore of the Como arm and arrives in a little over an hour. It’s the better choice if you’re flying into Malpensa and staying in Como first.

If you’re driving, Bellagio is one of the harder places on the lake to park. Villa Serbelloni, Villa La Rosa and Il Colle have free parking, Du Lac, Hotel Bellagio, Seta and Borgo Le Terrazze have private parking, and the hill hotels are the easiest to reach by car.

What to Do From Your Bellagio Hotel

TL;DR: From a Bellagio hotel you can visit the gardens of Villa Melzi, climb the stepped lanes of the old town, stand on the point where the lake divides, and take the ferry to Varenna, Menaggio and the villa gardens of Tremezzo.

The gardens of Villa Melzi run along the shore just south of the village, with lakeside paths, sculptures and centuries-old trees. I Giardini di Villa Melzi publishes its opening season and hours, which change through the year.

The old town is best seen early, before the day boats, when you can climb the cobbled stairways between the shops and have the lanes almost to yourself. Keep going to the tip of the promontory for the view up both arms of the lake.

Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzo are all a short ferry ride away. Varenna has the castle hike and its own gardens, Menaggio has the promenade, and Tremezzo has Villa Carlotta.

For a full day on the water, our guide to a perfect day on Lake Como plans the boat ride, Como’s old town and the funicular up to Brunate.

When to Book a Bellagio Hotel for 2027

TL;DR: Book a Bellagio hotel for summer 2027 now. It’s the most popular village on Lake Como, and the lakefront rooms for May through September go first.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots: April, May, late September and October bring warm days, the gardens at their best and far fewer day visitors, which in Bellagio makes a real difference.

July and August are glorious and busy, with every ferry running and the square full until late. If that’s when you’re coming, book a hotel with a pool or a garden to retreat to in the afternoon, and book it early, because those are the rooms that go first for 2027.
