TL;DR

Andorra is the country most hikers fly over on the way to somewhere else, and that is exactly why it works. Our self-guided Andorra hiking tour is 8 days, 7 nights and 6 hiking days in the Pyrenees: 71.4 km (44 miles), 5,315 m (17,440 ft) of climbing, and a high mountain lake on five of those six days. On day 6 you stand on Comapedrosa at 2,942 m (9,652 ft) with most of a whole country laid out below you, which is not a sentence you get to write about many places. On day 5 you hike the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, Andorra’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site and the last corner of the country with no road into it.

And here is the part that surprises people: all seven nights are in 4-star hotels, not huts or hostels, in Soldeu, La Massana and Escaldes-Engordany. Your bags travel between them without you. Every local transfer in the programme is included, along with maps, GPS tracks and route notes in an app built for your trip, a free custom training plan (valued at €300) and WhatsApp support throughout your trip.

Where Is Andorra? Our 8-Day Hiking Tour on the Map

Andorra sits high in the Pyrenees on the border between France and Spain, about three and a half hours by bus from Barcelona. Here is the whole tour on one map: six hikes, three bases, and every lake and peak you reach. Five of the six hikes are circular, so you finish where you started.

Highlights of Hiking in Andorra on Our Self-Guided Tour

  • Stand on Comapedrosa (2,942 m / 9,652 ft), the highest peak in Andorra, and take in a whole country in one turn of your head.
  • Reach a high mountain lake on five of your six hiking days, from Siscaro on day 2 to the deep blue Estanys de Tristaina below Arcalis on day 7.
  • Cross into France and back in a single day through the Incles Valley, past Juclar, three more lakes and Fontargente.
  • Climb Pic de la Serrera (2,905 m / 9,531 ft) with marmots whistling at you from the rocks, then drop into the Sorteny Nature Reserve watching for griffon and bearded vultures.
  • Hike the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, Andorra’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site: 4,247 hectares, more than 9% of the entire country, and the last place in Andorra with no road into it.
  • Sleep in a 4-star hotel every single night, with a real bed, a private bathroom and a proper breakfast, and finish at a spa hotel in Escaldes-Engordany, because day 6 happened.
  • Hike all 6 days carrying nothing but a daypack: your luggage moves between hotels for you.
  • Get all of that starting from just €1,195. A comparable hiking week in Europe, 4-star hotels and luggage transfers included, would easily run over €3,000.

Hiking in Andorra: What Our Self-Guided Andorra Hiking Tour Is Actually Like

Andorra is a small wedge of the high Pyrenees between France and Spain, with no airport and no railway station. You arrive by bus from Barcelona, up through the mountains, and the trails stay quiet because of it.

Our Andorra hiking tour gives you 6 hiking days to fix that: 71.4 km (44 miles), 5,315 m (17,440 ft) of climbing, a glacial lake on five of those days, and the summit of Comapedrosa at 2,942 m (9,652 ft). All seven nights are in 4-star hotels, your bags travel between them without you, and every transfer in the programme is arranged.

Who is this hiking in Andorra tour for? Hikers with some mountain experience behind them. This is genuine high-mountain terrain, and while nothing on it is technically difficult, there is no scrambling, no ladders and no cables, it does ask for sure footing on rocky ground and a head for a long climb. Five days are 4 to 7 hours with 540 m to 925 m of ascent, and Comapedrosa is 1,340 m. Your free training plan is built to get you ready for exactly that.

Included With Every Booking

Your Free Personalized Andorra Fitness Plan (€300 Value)

Every Andorra hiking tour booking includes a training plan built for this route, your current fitness level and where you live, even if it is flat as a table. Day 6 asks for 1,340 m (4,396 ft) of climbing in one go. Put the work in now and your future self, somewhere above the Comapedrosa refuge, will be extremely grateful.

Planning an Andorra hiking trip yourself is the cheapest option, but it eats your evenings: 7 hotel bookings, six trailheads to reach in a country with no train, and route notes stitched together from forum posts. A guided group tour does the planning for you, but it is the most expensive option and you hike at the group’s pace. Our self-guided Andorra hiking tours sit in between: we book the hotels, move your bags and arrange the transfers, and you hike at your own pace with your own people, with GPS tracks, a free training plan and WhatsApp support.

Andorra Hiking Routes: Our 8-Day Self-Guided Itinerary, Day by Day

Six hikes, three villages, one country. Five of the six days are graded easy or medium, and one, Comapedrosa, is graded difficult. Four of the six hikes start and finish at your hotel or at a trailhead we drive you to, so there is no route-finding stress at the end of a long day.

All times, distances and elevations are approximate, and the times do not include breaks. Allow more time than you think you need.

Welcome to the Pyrenees. You make your own way up to the mountain village of Soldeu, on your own schedule rather than ours, which means you can fly in when it suits you and take as long as you like getting here.

Most people fly into Barcelona and take the direct bus, which climbs into the mountains for about three and three quarter hours and drops you in Soldeu. See the FAQs below for the routes and the reason you should book that bus in advance.

Check in, then the rest of the day is yours. Wander the village, look up at tomorrow’s ridge, and start quietly wondering whether you brought enough socks.

  • Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Soldeu, breakfast included

Your first hike starts from the hotel door. You head up through the narrow streets of Soldeu and straight into pine forest on a long, steady climb on a good path, the kind you settle into after ten minutes and stop thinking about.

Then the trees stop, and the meadows start. In early summer they are red with alpine rose, which is one of those sights that makes people who do not normally photograph plants suddenly photograph plants.

Lake Siscaro is where you stop for a picnic and possibly a nap. Afterwards comes a short, steep pull to the Pas de les Vaques at 2,593 m (8,507 ft), the high point of the day, with the surrounding mountains laid out around you. The descent back to Soldeu runs through alpine meadow the whole way, with the village appearing and disappearing below you.

  • Hiking today: 12.5 km (7.8 miles), 925 m (3,035 ft) ascent, 4 to 6 hours, medium
  • Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Soldeu, breakfast included

A five minute transfer drops you at the Incles Valley car park, and then you climb gently beside the river through meadows carrying an almost absurd number of different alpine flowers.

Lake Juclar comes first, then the Col de Juclar at 2,450 m (8,038 ft), the high point of the day and the moment you cross into France. Snack at the top. You are now in a second country, on foot, before lunch.

The path down is narrow and threads past three more lakes in a row before the climb to Lake Fontargente, the biggest of the day and the best picnic spot on the whole tour. One last short climb, then the descent back to the car park.

Not feeling the full distance? There is a shorter option up the same valley to Lake Querol: 8.8 km (5.5 miles) and 600 m (1,969 ft). You decide in the morning, with a coffee, which is how these decisions should be made.

  • Hiking today: 14.4 km (8.9 miles), 825 m (2,707 ft) ascent, 5 to 7 hours, medium
  • Shorter option: 8.8 km (5.5 miles), 600 m (1,969 ft) ascent, to Lake Querol
  • Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Soldeu, breakfast included

Pack your bag properly this morning: you change hotels today, and your luggage travels while you climb a mountain. A fair trade.

A 20 minute transfer takes you to the Ransol car park, and from there you climb through pine forest to the Coms de Jan mountain hut. The views from the hut are the first real reward of the day, and you will be surrounded by marmots, who are very loud and entirely unbothered by you.

Keep climbing and start watching the sky. This is bearded vulture and griffon vulture country, and they come close enough that you stop mid-climb to watch. After about 6 km of steady ascent you reach the top of Pic de la Serrera at 2,905 m (9,531 ft), with the Sorteny Nature Reserve spread out below.

Not in the mood for the summit? Cross the col instead and drop straight into the valley. Either way, the descent through Sorteny is the loveliest downhill of the tour, and a transfer meets you at the car park to take you to your hotel in La Massana.

  • Hiking today: 10.2 km (6.3 miles), 913 m (2,995 ft) ascent, 5 to 6 hours, medium
  • Optional: skip the summit of Pic de la Serrera and cross the col into the valley
  • Accommodation: 4-star hotel in La Massana, breakfast included. Luggage transferred for you

Today is the easy day, and it is the one people describe first when they get home. A 30 minute transfer takes you to Lake Engolasters, and from there a virtually flat path leads into the hidden valley of the river Madriu.

You are now in the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, Andorra’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. It covers 4,247 hectares, a little more than 9% of the entire country, and it is the last place in Andorra that no road reaches. Everything in here arrived on foot or on a mule.

Along the river you pass vaulted stone shepherds’ huts, terraced fields and paved tracks: the working remains of a communal land system four Andorran communities have run together since the 13th century. UNESCO inscribed it in 2004 for exactly that, 700 years of people living well in a high mountain valley without wrecking it.

You follow the river the whole way to the Font Verd mountain hut, which is exactly the oasis it sounds like and the right place for a long picnic. The water here is glacial and gin-clear, and if one person in your group swims, everybody ends up swimming.

You return to Lake Engolasters on an ancient stone path, and a transfer takes you back to La Massana with plenty of daylight left.

  • Hiking today: 11.2 km (7.0 miles), 540 m (1,772 ft) ascent, 3 to 4 hours, easy, in the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Accommodation: 4-star hotel in La Massana, breakfast included

This is the one people book the tour for. A private transfer takes you from your hotel in La Massana to Arinsal, and from there the trail climbs 1,340 m (4,396 ft) to the roof of an entire country.

You go up through forest, then out into proper high mountain terrain, past the Comapedrosa refuge and the dark water of Estany Negre, and finally onto the rocky ridge to the summit at 2,942 m (9,652 ft).

And then you are standing on the highest point in Andorra with the Pyrenees running away in both directions and, on a clear day, most of the country laid out below you. There is a real moment up there. People go quiet, then start taking photos, then go quiet again.

Your transfer is waiting in Arinsal to take you straight back to La Massana, so the only decision left is where dinner is.

  • Hiking today: 14 km (8.7 miles), 1,340 m (4,396 ft) ascent, 6 to 7 hours, difficult
  • Accommodation: 4-star hotel in La Massana, breakfast included

Last hotel change, so pack your bag for transport one more time. Then a short transfer takes you up to Arcalis, in the Ordino valley, for a finale that knows exactly what it is doing.

It is a steady 4.5 km climb to the top of Pic de Tristaina at 2,876 m (9,436 ft), and the payoff is a 360 degree view with the three Tristaina lakes glittering in the bowl below you. After yesterday, this one feels like a victory lap with a view attached.

You descend to Arcalis on a high mountain path, and a transfer takes you to your last hotel in Escaldes-Engordany, next to the capital, Andorra la Vella. It has a spa, which after six days and 5,315 m of climbing feels less like a hotel facility and more like a reward ceremony.

  • Hiking today: 9.1 km (5.7 miles), 772 m (2,533 ft) ascent, 4 to 5 hours, medium
  • Accommodation: 4-star spa hotel in Escaldes-Engordany, breakfast included. Luggage transferred for you

In 6 hiking days you covered 71.4 km (44 miles) and climbed 5,315 m (17,440 ft). You reached a high mountain lake on five of those days, crossed into France and back on foot, and stood on the highest point of an entire country.

Breakfast, then the bus back down to Barcelona, and a slightly smug silence for most of the journey. Andorra is small. It does not feel small from up there.

What Hikers Say About Hiking in Andorra

Really enjoyed hiking in Andorra. The hike up to Lake Siscaro was probably my favourite: beautiful scenery the whole way and the lake was gorgeous. The views from the top were worth the climb!

– James

We saw so many marmots hiking around La Serrera, which was a fun surprise. The scenery was amazing too, especially looking across the Sorteny Nature Reserve from the top. Andorra feels much wilder than I expected.

– Steve

Comapedrosa was a tough day but definitely one of the highlights. Estany Negre was beautiful and the views from the summit were incredible. I was pretty tired by the end, but very glad we did it!

– Anna

I hadn’t really considered Andorra for hiking before this, but I’m so glad we went. The Tristaina lakes were stunning and I loved how different the landscapes were from day to day. Mountains, lakes, forests and little villages, lots of variety.

When Is the Best Time to Hike in Andorra?

The best time to hike in Andorra is mid-June to the end of September, once the high passes are clear of snow and the alpine meadows are in flower. July and September give you the same trails as August without the high season supplement. May and early June are greener and quieter, with the waterfalls at full volume, though a snowy winter can leave patches on the highest sections. October brings autumn colour and empty trails. Online booking closes 45 days before your start date.

Accommodation: Your 4-Star Hotels in Andorra

You stay 7 nights in 4-star hotels, every single night: 3 in Soldeu, 3 in La Massana below Comapedrosa, and 1 at a spa hotel in Escaldes-Engordany, next to the capital, Andorra la Vella. You will have a private bathroom, and breakfast is included every morning. There are no huts, no hostels and no dormitories on this tour, which for a hiking week at this price in Europe is unusual. Hotels may vary depending on availability at the time of booking.

What Our Hikers Say About Booking a Self-Guided Tour With Us

This was our first trip with Monkeys and Mountains Hiking Tours and I would have to say it was very well organized! It was also our first self guided tour so we didn’t know what to expect. We were extremely satisfied with Monkeys & Mountains and would highly recommend travel with them.

Andorra Hiking Tour Info: Accommodation, Luggage, Season and Getting There

Our Andorra hiking tour runs from 1 May to 30 October. The high mountain trails are at their best from mid-June to the end of September, once the passes are clear of snow.

Mid-July to early September is peak season: wildflowers at their best, all the high passes normally open, daytime temperatures of 18 to 25 C, clear lakes and the best wildlife spotting. May to early July is greener and quieter, with waterfalls at full volume, though a snowy winter can leave patches on the highest sections. Mid-September into October brings autumn color, cool hiking temperatures, quiet trails and usually stable weather, with the first snowfall possible on the highest peaks towards the end of the month.

You stay 7 nights in 4-star hotels, every single night: 3 in Soldeu, 3 in La Massana below Comapedrosa, and 1 in Escaldes-Engordany next to Andorra la Vella, where the last night is at a spa hotel. Breakfast is included every morning. There are no huts, no hostels and no dormitories on this tour, which for a hiking week at this price in Europe is unusual, and it is the thing hikers comment on most.

Rooms are doubles or twins as standard, and hotels may vary depending on availability at the time of booking.

Your luggage is moved between hotels for you on the two hotel-change days, so you never hike with more than a daypack. Four of the six hikes start and finish at the same hotel or at a trailhead we transfer you to and from.

In your daypack: water, lunch, warm and waterproof layers, sun protection and a first aid kit. Above 2,500 m the weather can turn while you are eating your sandwich.

We grade this tour Moderate to Challenging. Across 6 hiking days you cover 71.4 km (44 miles) and climb 5,315 m (17,440 ft).

Our local partner in Andorra puts it plainly, and so will we: this is true high-mountain terrain, and some previous mountain experience really helps. It is not technically difficult. There is no scrambling, no ladders, no cables and no exposure you have to talk yourself through. What it does ask for is sure footing on rocky ground, a head for a long climb, and the fitness to do it again the next morning.

One day is easy (11.2 km and 540 m in the Madriu valley), four are medium (9.1 to 14.4 km with 772 m to 925 m of ascent) and one is difficult: Comapedrosa, 14 km with 1,340 m of ascent over 6 to 7 hours. The trails are well marked mountain paths, rocky in the upper sections.

You should be comfortable hiking 5 to 6 hours with 900 m of ascent on consecutive days before you book. Your free custom training plan (€300 value) is built to get you there, and if you are not sure whether you are ready, ask us. We will tell you honestly.

Every local transfer described in the programme is included: the trailhead transfers on days 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, and the transfers to your hotels after the hikes on days 4, 5 and 7.

Getting to and from Andorra is not included, and you make your own way to Soldeu, which keeps your travel schedule yours rather than ours. Andorra has no airport and no railway station. Almost everyone flies into Barcelona El Prat and takes a direct bus: see the FAQs below for the two routes and journey times, and book your seat online in advance.

Day 5 of our Andorra hiking tour goes into the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Andorra, and one of the reasons we built the tour around this particular week.

It covers 4,247 hectares, a little more than 9% of the whole principality, with a further 4,092 hectares of buffer zone around it. UNESCO inscribed it in 2004 as a cultural landscape: a high Pyrenean valley where people have harvested mountain resources for millennia under a communal land-ownership system that four Andorran communities have run together since the 13th century.

The detail that makes it feel different underfoot is the simplest one. It is the last place in the country with no road into it. You get there by hiking in, past vaulted stone shepherds’ huts, terraced fields, paved mule tracks and the remains of Catalan forge iron smelting, and the valley is exactly as quiet as that sounds.

You can read the full inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage Centre site.

Breakfast is included every morning at your hotel. Lunches and dinners are not included, which is deliberate: you eat where you want, when you want, and you are not waiting for a group of 14 to decide.

Most days you will want a picnic, because the best lunch spots on this tour are Lake Siscaro, Lake Fontargente and the Font Verd hut, and none of them has a menu. Your hotel can usually sort one out if you ask the night before.

Travel insurance is not included and we strongly recommend it. Make sure your policy covers hiking above 3,000 m, mountain rescue and trip cancellation, and remember that day 3 crosses into France, so a policy covering only Andorra is not enough.

Not sure what to get? Use our Adventure Travel Insurance Finder and get a tailored recommendation in under 60 seconds.

You book your Andorra hiking tour online and a 30% deposit holds your dates. The balance is due 40 days before you hike, and we start reserving your hotels as soon as the deposit arrives.

Questions before you book? Contact us. We like these questions, and we would rather talk it through now than have you guess.

Daily distances run from 9.1 km (5.7 miles) on the shortest day to 14.4 km (8.9 miles) on the longest, averaging about 12 km (7.4 miles), with between 540 m and 1,340 m of ascent. Hiking times are 3 to 4 hours on the easy day and 6 to 7 hours on Comapedrosa, not counting breaks.

When is the best time to go hiking in Andorra?

The best time to go hiking in Andorra is mid-July to early September, when the high passes are open, the wildflowers are at their peak, daytime temperatures sit between 18 and 25 C and the lakes are clear. May to early July is greener and quieter with waterfalls at full volume, although a snowy winter can leave patches on the highest sections. Mid-September into October brings autumn color, cool hiking temperatures and quiet trails, with the first snow possible on the highest peaks late in the month. Our tour runs from 1 May to 30 October.

How do you get to Andorra, and is there an airport?

There is no airport in Andorra and no railway station, so almost everyone flies into Barcelona El Prat (BCN) and takes a direct bus. The Andbus service runs several times a day from Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 straight to the Soldeu bus stop, and takes about 3 hours 45 minutes. Alternatively the Andorra Direct Bus runs from the airport or Barcelona Sants station to Andorra la Vella bus station in about 3 hours, and a local L2 or L3/L4 bus or a short taxi takes you up the valley to Soldeu. Book your bus seat online in advance, because these routes are popular and you want one that lines up with your flight.

What is the highest peak in Andorra, and can you hike it without climbing gear?

The highest peak in Andorra is Comapedrosa at 2,942 m (9,652 ft), and yes, it is a hike rather than a climb. From Arinsal the trail gains 1,340 m (4,396 ft) through forest and high mountain terrain, passing the Comapedrosa refuge and Estany Negre before the final rocky section to the summit. It is a 14 km (8.7 mile) round trip taking 6 to 7 hours. You need hiking boots, decent weather and a good pair of legs, not ropes.

Does the Andorra hiking tour visit Andorra’s UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Yes. Day 5 of the Monkeys and Mountains Andorra hiking tour is spent in the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Andorra. UNESCO inscribed it in 2004 as a cultural landscape: 4,247 hectares, a little more than 9% of the entire country, shaped by four communities who have managed it communally since the 13th century. It is also the last place in Andorra with no road into it, so the only way in is on foot. Your hike is 11.2 km (7.0 miles) with 540 m (1,772 ft) of ascent, from Lake Engolasters along the river to the Font Verd hut and back, past vaulted stone shepherds’ huts and paved mule tracks.

Do you carry your luggage on the Monkeys and Mountains Andorra hiking tour?

No, you do not carry your luggage on the Monkeys and Mountains Andorra hiking tour. Your bags are moved between hotels for you on the two hotel-change days, so you hike with a daypack holding water, lunch, layers and a camera. Four of the six hikes start and finish at the same hotel or trailhead anyway.

Where do you stay on the Andorra hiking tour?

On the Monkeys and Mountains Andorra hiking tour you stay 7 nights in 4-star hotels in three places: Soldeu, high in the Grandvalira valley; La Massana, below Comapedrosa; and Escaldes-Engordany, next to the capital Andorra la Vella, where the last night is at a spa hotel. Breakfast is included every morning, and hotels may vary depending on availability at the time of booking.

How does a self-guided hiking tour actually work?

A self-guided hiking tour works like this: we plan the route, book every night of accommodation, arrange the transfers and move your luggage between hotels, then hand you the whole trip as a set of maps, GPS tracks and day-by-day route notes in an app. You hike it on your own, at your own pace, with the people you chose to come with, and there is no guide walking in front of you and no group to keep up with. If something goes wrong, you message us. On our Andorra hiking tour you also get an in-person welcome briefing before you set off. We wrote a full guide to what you actually get on a self-guided hiking tour, and who should skip one, if you want the honest version before you book.

Is the Andorra hiking tour guided or self-guided?

The Andorra hiking tour is self-guided, which means Monkeys and Mountains books your hotels, arranges your luggage transfers and every local transfer in the programme, and gives you maps, GPS tracks and route notes in an app built for your trip. You get an in-person welcome briefing from our local partner before you set off, and then there is no guide and no group: you start each morning when you want, sit at the lake for as long as you want, and you have WhatsApp support throughout your trip if anything goes sideways.

How much does an Andorra hiking tour cost?

The Monkeys and Mountains Andorra hiking tour costs €1,195 per person sharing a double room. That includes 7 nights in 4-star hotels (every night, no huts or hostels), 7 breakfasts, an in-person welcome briefing, luggage transfers between hotels, all local transfers in the programme, your route app with maps and GPS tracks, and a free custom training plan valued at €300. Your own room adds a €485 single supplement, and travelling in August adds a €300 high season supplement. Flights, getting to Andorra, lunches, dinners and travel insurance are not included.

Can a solo traveler book the Andorra hiking tour?

Yes, a solo traveler can book the Andorra hiking tour. The price is €1,195 plus a €190 solo traveler fee plus the €485 single supplement, so €1,870 in total, and you get your own room every night. Four of the six hikes are circular from your hotel or trailhead, which makes hiking solo here straightforward.

Is the Andorra hiking tour a good first multi-day hiking trip?

Honestly, no: the Monkeys and Mountains Andorra hiking tour is not the one to pick for your first multi-day hiking trip. This is true high-mountain terrain that benefits from some previous mountain experience, and one day climbs 1,340 m (4,396 ft). It is not technically difficult, and the comforts are real (4-star hotels every night, your luggage moved, four of the six hikes returning to the same point, and a shorter option on day 3), but it is a step up rather than a starting point. For a genuinely good first multi-day trip, ask us about our Cinque Terre or Wicklow Way tours, then come to Andorra next.

What are the Estanys de Tristaina, and can you hike to them?

The Estanys de Tristaina are three deep blue glacial lakes stacked in a bowl below the Tristaina ridge at Arcalis, in the Ordino valley in northern Andorra, and yes, you hike above them on day 7 of our Andorra hiking tour. From the Arcalis trailhead it is a steady 4.5 km climb to the summit of Pic de Tristaina at 2,876 m (9,436 ft), with the lakes glittering below you, then a descent on a high mountain path. The full day is 9.1 km (5.7 miles) with 772 m (2,533 ft) of ascent, 4 to 5 hours.

What is the Vall d’Incles in Andorra, and what can you hike from it?

The Vall d’Incles, or Incles Valley, is a glacial valley near Soldeu in eastern Andorra, known for the diversity of alpine flowers along its river, and it is the starting point for day 3 of our Andorra hiking tour. From its car park, 5 minutes by transfer from Soldeu, you climb to Estany de Juclar and over the Col de Juclar at 2,450 m (8,038 ft) into France, past three more lakes to Estany de Fontargente. That is 14.4 km (8.9 miles) with 825 m (2,707 ft) of ascent, with a shorter 8.8 km (5.5 mile) option to Estany de Querol.

What is the Sorteny Nature Reserve in Andorra?

The Sorteny Nature Reserve is a protected high mountain valley in northern Andorra, below Pic de la Serrera, and on day 4 of our Andorra hiking tour you descend right through it. It is the best place on the tour for birds of prey: griffon vultures and bearded vultures ride the thermals over the valley, often close enough to stop you in your tracks. The day climbs 913 m (2,995 ft) from the Ransol car park to the summit of Pic de la Serrera at 2,905 m (9,531 ft) before dropping into Sorteny, and a transfer meets you at the bottom.

Where does the Comapedrosa hike start in Andorra?

The Comapedrosa hike starts in the village of Arinsal, in north-west Andorra, and on day 6 of our Andorra hiking tour a private transfer takes you there from your hotel in La Massana. From Arinsal the trail climbs 1,340 m (4,396 ft) through forest and high mountain terrain, passing the Comapedrosa refuge and the dark water of Estany Negre, before the final rocky section to the summit at 2,942 m (9,652 ft). It is 14 km (8.7 miles) round trip and takes 6 to 7 hours, and the transfer is waiting in Arinsal when you come back down.

What wildlife will you see hiking in Andorra?

Hiking in Andorra you are very likely to see marmots, which are impossible to miss around the Coms de Jan hut on the Pic de la Serrera day because they whistle at you from every boulder field. Chamois graze the higher meadows, and griffon and bearded vultures ride the thermals above the Sorteny Nature Reserve. Golden eagles are the harder sighting. Bring binoculars: the vultures come closer than you expect.

Are any of the hiking trails in Andorra on this tour optional or shorter?

Yes, two of the hiking trails on the Monkeys and Mountains Andorra hiking tour have a shorter option. Day 3 can be cut from 14.4 km (8.9 miles) and 825 m of ascent to 8.8 km (5.5 miles) and 600 m by turning up the same valley to Lake Querol instead of continuing to Fontargente. On day 4 you can skip the summit of Pic de la Serrera and cross the col instead, then descend the Sorteny valley as normal. You decide on the morning, not at booking.
