San Francisco to Sonoma Wine Country: Self-Guided Hiking and Wine Tasting Overview

Enjoy this nine-day/eight-night self-guided active vacation based on the famed inn-to-inn hikes in Europe. You’ll experience the best of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Northern California Wine Country. This vacation takes you to San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito, Muir Woods National Monument, and to superb Sonoma Wine Country estate wineries. This trip is a fantastic active vacation that combines hiking, wine tasting, a bit of shopping, world-class dining and luxurious accommodations, optional spa treatments and luxury in a gorgeous setting!

The hike includes 6 days of hiking from 8 to 10 miles (13 to 16 km). You’ll have the opportunity to sightsee and shop in both San Francisco and Sausalito, as well as relax at Muir Beach on the Pacific Ocean. Each night you will stay in premier lodging, ranging from charming country inns to luxury boutique hotels, While in the Wine Country, you’ll have wine tastings every day, 4 in total, including vineyard tours, cave tastings, and mountaintop tastings.

Day 1: Arrive in San Francisco

Hiking from San Francisco to Sonoma

Start your vacation in San Francisco, staying near the famous Ghirardelli Square and Fisherman’s Wharf.  Enjoy the ambience of this beautiful city strolling along the waterfront or riding on a historic cable car.  Lodge in a luxury boutique hotel and you may choose to dine at a world-class restaurant, recognized by both Michelin and Wine Spectator.

  • Hiking Today: No planned hikes. If you are arriving early, let us know, and we will include the trail guide for a great walking tour of San Francisco, the Barbary Coast Trail. 4 miles (6.43 km) with 250 feet (75 m) elevation gain and loss.

Day 2: Hike from San Francisco – Sausalito

Walk along the San Francisco waterfront, across the majestic Golden Gate Bridge, and into the historic village of Sausalito.  Along the way enjoy splendid views of the City and Bay of San Francisco, including Alcatraz and Angel Islands.  Your luxury boutique hotel and spa is on the waterfront in Sausalito, where you can enjoy the artist’s studios, cafes, and restaurants of this charming town.  Dinner this evening can be at another Michelin recognized Wine Spectator restaurant.

  • Hiking Today: 9 miles (14 km) with 250 feet (75 m) elevation gain and loss.

Day 3: Hike from Sausalito – Muir Beach

Hike across the beautiful coastal hills in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to the village of Muir Beach.  Enjoy spectacular views of the rugged Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco skyline.  Take time to relax on the sandy beach when you arrive in town.  Tonight’s lodging is a classic English Tudor Inn with an elegant salon for guests and a Pub reminiscent of Stratford-on-Avon where you’ll enjoy classic pub fare paired with excellent local and international wines and beers.

  • Hiking Today: 9 miles (14 km) with 2300 feet (700 m) of elevation gain and loss.

Day 4: Hike from Muir Beach – Mill Valley

Hike to Mount Tamalpais taking in the dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean.  Descend into Muir Woods National Monument enjoying the ancient and magical redwood forest.  Then hike part of the Dipsea Trail, where the famed Dipsea Race is run. Finish in the charming town of Mill Valley and enjoy dinner at one of the excellent Mill Valley restaurants.

  • Hiking Today: 10 miles (16 km) with 2000 feet (610 m) of elevation gain and 1900 feet (580 m) of elevation loss.

Day 5: Relax in Mill Valley and Wine Tasting in Kenwood

Enjoy a relaxing day with no planned hikes. Explore the town of Mill Valley or relax at your inn before an early lunch and transfer to Kenwood. Your first winery experience of the trip will be at a world-class estate winery where they produce and make wines only from their vast estate.  Enjoy learning about the estate as you are taken to their mountaintop terrace to sip excellent wines overlooking a stunning view of their vineyards and the Valley of the Moon. You then walk a short distance to your 5-star inn to relax before dinner. Dinner is at a wonderful restaurant within walking distance of your inn.

Day 6: Kenwood and Hiking in Hood Mountain Regional Park

Today is a gorgeous and challenging hike in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park and Hood Mountain Regional Park.  After a short transport, you will hike up to the top of a 2700 foot mountain and enjoy your picnic lunch on a rock outcropping overlooking one of the best views in the wine country. 

After meandering down the mountain you will finish your trek with a wonderful wine tasting experience at one of California’s premier wineries. After your tasting, you will be transferred back to your lodging to relax before another wonderful wine country dinner.

Hiking Today: 8 miles (13 km) with 2100 feet (640 m) elevation gain and 2300 feet (700 m) elevation loss.

Day 7: Glen Ellen to Hiking in the North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park

Today you will be transported to North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park to hike among the oak, chaparral, and redwoods.  After a picnic lunch in the park, you will finish your hike at another fabulous wine country inn and spa.  After resting, walk to a local tasting room for a special salon tasting. Dinner tonight will be at one of the wonderful local restaurants within walking distance of your lodging.

Hiking Today: 9 miles (13 km) with 1200 feet (365 m) elevation gain and 1900 feet (580 m) elevation loss.

Day 8: Glen Ellen to Hiking in Jack London Park

Continue your trek with a hike through Jack London State Park with its ancient redwood trees and meandering creeks. You will visit the “Grandmother Tree”, a 1,800-year-old redwood tree.  You can also visit the author’s home, as well as a museum established by his wife.  After a hike through the park, finish your day with a special tour and tasting at a vineyard estate and winery. Return to your inn, where you can relax by the pool or enjoy a spa treatment.  Dinner tonight will again be at one of the wonderful local restaurants within walking distance of your lodging.

Hiking Today: 8 miles (13 km) with 900 feet (270 m) elevation gain and loss.

Day 9: Trek Conclusion

Availability

You can start your trek on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday. You choose the day that works best for you.

Best Time To Go

You can do this trip year round but we recommend April and May followed by October and November. Summers can be foggy and hot in land but are also popular.

Booking in Advance

While you can book anytime, we recommend booking 4 to 6 months in advance to ensure that accommodation is available on your start date. This region is very popular and accommodations often fill up months in advance. Some accommodations and restaurants have very limited space. 

Luggage 

Your luggage will be transferred to your accommodation each day. 

Grade and Terrain

Grade 2 (medium). The elevation difference is between 250 – 2300 ft (75 – 700 m) and you’ll hike between 8 – 10 miles (13 – 16 km) each day. 

Self-Guided Tours

This walk is a self-guided hiking and wine-tasting tour. You get the flexibility and freedom of starting your day when you choose, hiking at your own pace and taking breaks whenever your heart (or lungs) desire and lingering over delectable wine tastings that we’ve arranged for you.

We’ll take care of booking your accommodation, provide you with a map and trail notes. We’re there for you prior to and during your trip. Ask all the questions you want. We can also recommend restaurants based on your dining preferences and are happy to make reservations for you. 

Location

Your trip starts in San Francisco and each day you’ll hike (with one rest day in which we’ll arrange a transfer for you) to your next accommodation. You’ll finish in the village of Glen Ellen just north of Sonoma. 

Fitness Level

You should be in good physical condition and be a regular walker or hiker. The route is not technical so no prior expertise is required.

Pricing

$3300 USD per person from December to March and $3900 per person from April to November for premium rooms. Prices are per person based on double accommodation.

A single supplement is available for $6100 USD and $7300 USD respectively.

Standard rooms are also available for $2625 USD per person from December to March or $3125 per person from April to November, based on double occupancy.

A single supplement for the standard rooms is available for $4750 USD and $5750 USD respectively.

Payment Info

A $300 USD per person deposit is due at the time of booking. As soon as we receive your deposit, we will start making the arrangements for your accommodation.The remaining balance is due 60 days before the onset of the trip and will automatically be charged.   • Dinners are not included in our treks.  We have found that our clients are passionate about food, and want the ability to select their own menu items and restaurants where dining options are available.  We provide descriptions and reviews of local restaurants and make reservations for you.

  • Pre and post trip airport transfer are also not included.

  • Travel insurance that covers you for this tour and includes emergency evacuation and hospital care in the unlikely incident that you get injured. World Nomads insurance covers this which is why we recommend it.
