Fliegerlied The Song You Need to Know Before Going to Oktoberfest

Each year there is a new hit Oktoberfest song. It’s usually a German dance song that has been adapted for Oktoberfest.  But there’s always the oldies but goodies.

My favorite Oktoberfest song without a doubt is Fliegerlied (So ein schöner Tag)!

The lyrics are fun and it’s the song that gets everyone up dancing on the benches (dancing on the tables themselves is strictly forbidden), but the best part is the dance moves that go with it.  Take a look:

Fliegerlied  (German)

Ich lieg gern im Gras
Und schau zum Himmel rauf
Schauen die ganzen Wolken
Nicht lustig aus?
Und fliegt en Flieger vorbei
Dann wink ich zu ihm rauf
“Hallo Flieger!”
Und bist du auch noch dabei
Dann bin ich super drauf

Und ich flieg, flieg, flieg wie ein Flieger
Bin so stark, stark, stark wie ein Tiger
Und so groß, groß, groß wie ‘ne Giraffe
So hoch oh, oh, oh

Aviator Song (English Translation, but it’s sung in German)

I like lying in the grass
And looking up into the sky
Don’t all these clouds
Look funny?
And an aviator flies past
Then I wave up to him
“Hello aviator!“
And if you’re there, too
Then I have the time of my life
And I fly, fly, fly like an aviator
I’m so strong, strong, strong like a tiger
And so big, big, big like a giraffe
So tall, oh, oh, oh
And I jump, jump, jump again and again
And I swim, swim, swim over to you
And I take, take, take you by the hand,
’cause I like you
And I say
Today is such a beautiful day
Today is such a beautiful day
Today is such a beautiful day

And here is what Fliegerlied looks like when performed by thousands of people in an Oktoberfest tent:

I’ve memorized the lyrics months ago! Now, I can’t wait to try out the dance moves in my new dirndl!

  1. I love it. I’ve never been to Oktoberfest, but when I was in Munich last Christmas a bar full of friendly drunks were singing and dancing to this song. The bartender translated it for us. It’s so infectious. I’m dying to go enjoy it in it’s proper context!

    • @Marina – Anytime is the perfect time for that song :). Will you be going to Oktoberfest this year? It’s really something to see how worked up it gets the crowd.

  2. It’s funny how the first video makes it look like the dumbest dance I’ve ever seen, yet when you get thousands of people to do it at once, it looks like a blast! The song still lacks a little in my mind though. Do the Scorpions have an Oktoberfest song?

  3. I love that song! Heard it heaps last year but never knew the translation. Just remember swim, swim, swim. Ah the good memories!

  4. I haven’t been to Oktoberfest yet, and we probably won’t go til next year, so I don’t have a favorite Oktoberfest song. This looks like fun though.

  5. Listen to me, I’m the OKTOBERFEST EXPERT.
Category 1: “Wahnsinn”, “Cowboy und Indianer”, “Flieglied”, “Joana”, “Viva Bavaria”.
This is definitely top 5 in the tents. By far!
Category 2: “Hände zum Himmel”, “Ein Stern der deinen namen trägt”, “Zehn meter geh”, “Das Rote Pferd”, “Allez Allez”!
    Also great fun to sing!
Category 3: “Knallrotes gummibot”, “Das geht ab”, “Fürstenfeld”, “Sierra Madre”, “Eine Neue Liebe ist wie ein Neues Leben”
    Also worth practicing before OF.

If you know these 15 songs you will do fine, and…oooh, dont forget “Ein Proooosit!”

    • @Five-time-visitor Great list. “viva Bavaria” is one of my favorites as well, but I do get sick of “Ein Proooosit” after hearing it for the tenth time in a few hours.

  6. My favourite was the Aviator song – even though the only words I knew was “Schwimm, Schwimm, Schwimm” and “La la la la la”:) – especially after a few Radlers (I am not a big beer drinker).

  7. I’m a huge fan of your blog! I’m in the planning stages of starting my own travel blog. Do you use mailchimp or aweber, or which do you recommend?
