GREEK CYCLADES ISLANDS OF TINOS AND NAXOS HIKING TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Tinos Island

Starting point for your hike on Tinos, in the Greek Cyclades Islands hiking tourBoard the ferry from Rafina Port (20 minutes from Athens Airport)to the island of Tinos (~ 2-3 hours).  Upon arriving in Tinos, we’ll transfer you to your hotel in Chora (population 4864), the capital of Tinos.

Day 2: Hike Chora – Xobourgo- Koumaros – Volax – Falatados

Hiking from Chora to Falatados, in the Greek Cyclades Islands hiking tourYour first hike takes you on an old paved path up to Xobourgo, the old Byzantine Fort on the island. Your efforts are rewarded with remarkable views of the Aegean Sea. Then you’ll continue walking down to Volax, an isolated, small white village in the middle of a plateau surrounded by hills of granite blocks. Then you’ll carry on hiking to the village of Falatados,  the second biggest settlement on Tinos. Be sure to check out the imposing Cathedral and the famous House of Sketch, a unique museum of political cartoon caricatures. It’s the only one of its kind in Greece.

Day 3: Hike to the Marble Villages of Tinos: From Pyrgos to Agianaki Bay

Hiking through ruins in the Cyclades IslandsToday you’ll hike through the most important and interesting marble villages of Tinos. You’ll start from the village of Pyrgos renowned for its beautiful whitewashed alleys, squares with cafes and marble sculptors. Insider Tip: visit the marble museum before starting your hike.

Your hike starts from the interior of Tinos descending towards the village of Isternia. With its marble-paved lanes and picturesque arches framing the narrow paths, the village is a magnificent demonstration of fine marble sculpture. You’ll love the impressive views of the island of Syros and of the Aegean Sea.  Then you’ll continue on to Kardiani Village, a gem of Tinos with its narrow alleys,  churches and gorgeous vistas. The “the marble-paved road” continues down to Agianaki Bay where it ends at a beautiful beach.

  • Highlights: Spectacular sea views, traditional villages, marble quarries, terraces, secluded nice beach for swimming

Day 4: Hike Chora Tinou: Ktikados – Kionia – Chora Tinou

Amazing views of the Egean sea durong the hiking tour in the Greek Cyclades IslandsToday you’ll discover the picturesque villages and dovecotes (a structure for doves or pigeons) of Tinos. You’ll hike on an impressive medieval paved path (Kalderimi), and visit the old villages of Ktikados, Xatzirados and Tarabados, the heart of traditional dovecote architecture before reach Kiona Bay, the most developed of the beaches on Tinos. After a refreshing swim return to Chora by hiking and enjoy your last night on Tinos.

Day 5: Ferry to Naxos

Arrival in Naxos, transfer and settle to your hotel.

The rest of the day relax, the Naxian way: swim in the turquoise crystal clear Naxian sea and then walk and explore Chora, the capital town of Naxos. Chora has an interesting mix of Venetian and Cycladic elements, and despite tourism, it has kept its authentic and traditional character. Above the port stands the impressive Venetian castle, and in the northern part of the capital, a long paved road leads to the Temple of Apollo and the famous Portara (Big Door) which is the gate of the temple. Whilst strolling the harbour we encounter fishermen, vendors selling local produce, yachts docking, images of what Greece is all about.

Day 6: Naxos Hiking and Cultural Tour

Exploring the Cyclades Islands CultureThis incredibly unique trail covers the entire history of the island. All in one hike! The hike starts from Kouros Statues. These larger-than-life statues of young men, predestined to hold on to a temple roof, were abandoned incomplete by the ancient sculptors when they discovered faults in the marble. Then you’ll follow the path to the picturesque village of Ano Potamia. After a short refreshing stop at the village’s spring,  hike to Apano Kastro (Upper Castle. From here you’ll get a spectacular view of Naxos town, port, and the surrounding villages. Then you’ll continue onwards via Tsikalario to the small village to Halki. We recommend visiting Valindras, a small distillery that produces Kitron (the local alcoholic drink of Naxos). Note: If you want a longer hike start in the villages of Melanes.

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Highlights: gigantic life-sized Kouros statues, a local distillery, beautiful small hamlets and villages
  • Overnight: Naxos

Day 7: Hike From Koronos Village to Lionas Bay

hiking trail near Koronos overlooking the Egean Sea and a gorgeous beachToday is a spectacular and fairly easy walk taking you to an isolated area, with stunning mountain views, leading to the beautiful beach of Liónas with its multi-coloured pebbles. The hike starts from the village of Kornos, an authentic village with small downward sloping narrow streets. Koronos is one of the six villages of Naxos permitted to mine emery, and its story inspired a recent documentary named “Emery tales”.

From here it’s a 2.5 to 3-hour hike. You’ll walk in a fertile valley, admiring the island’s endemic flora and fauna. You’ll pass through a stable where you can see locals preparing the famous local cheese, myzíthra. There’s also a short climb leading to a protruding rock above a large gorge. You’ll be The panoramic view from up here is stunning.

You’ll then descend down to Lionas Bay where you can swim in crystal clear waters.

  • Highlights: Koronos, one of the most authentic Naxian villages, mining cable cars spectacular sea views, finishing by the sea for a swim

Day 8: Hike Up Mount Zas Peak

Top of the Mount Zas overlooking the Egean Sea om NaxosIf you want to say that you went hiking in the Cyclades Islands, then you have to hike up to Zas Peak. It’s a spectacular hike with views that feel like you are on an airplane. The islands that surround Naxos, appear like little rocks in the sea, since Zas is the highest mountain in the Cyclades. It is referred to as one of the oldest trails. Ancient Greek pilgrims used to hike up to worship the Greek God Zeus with sacrifices. While Zeus was born in Crete, he was brought up in Naxos. As a result, this mountain is filled with myths, including that Zas Peak was where an eagle offered Zeus his thunderbolt, which is when he became the God of the gods.

Day 9: Departure Day

You’ve now experienced the authentic Cyclades Islands of Tinos and Naxos in a unique way by hiking. After breakfast, we’ll transfer you to the port. 


GETTING TO  THE CYCLADES ISLANDS IN GREECE

There are two ferry companies connecting Athens with the Cyclades Islands. Take the ferry from Rafina Port (20 minutes from Athens Airport) to Tinos Island at the start of the tour (~2-3 hours depending on the ferry).

At the end of your tour, you’ll take the ferry from Naxos Island back to Amorgos Port (~ 1.5 to 4 hours depending on the ferry).

CYCLADES ISLANDS TOUR INFO

This trip Level is moderate. You’ll be hiking for six days with moderate hikes of 3 – 7 hours. The summit hike has an elevation gain of ~ 1000 m. You’ll be hiking on well-kept paths and stony cobbled paths. If you have knee issues we recommend bringing hiking poles.
