Plansee Photo

Plansee AustriaThe Plansee is a lake located in the northern state of Tyrol, Austria.

The 2.87 km long lake is nestled between mountains and is an adventure seekers paradise offering activities from a wide range of water sports to hiking and biking.  I was taking a diving course to get my drysuit certification and it was my first time cold water diving.  Even though I was wearing a drysuit, mountain lakes are still cold, ~ 12 C in this case – go figure.  Plus we only saw a few fish.   My husband is a big fan of lake diving in the Alps.  Me? Not so much.  He enjoys diving for the sake of diving.  I enjoy diving IF I see something AND if I’m not frozen to death. Next time I think I’ll stick to enjoying the Plansee and the dramatic scenery above the surface.

It’s been two years since my first visit to the Plansee and despite my best intentions to come back and enjoy the other activities that you can do – canoeing, or enjoying the lake views from one of the many hiking trails, I have yet to do so. I have visited Stuiben Falls, the highest waterfall in Tyrol, and visited Krimml Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Austria, and hiked around the Hechtsee, but my second visit to the Plansee has eluded me.  It’s OK though, it just means that I’m fortunate enough to live in a place where there’s much to do and see and so many great places to hike and that’s right in Bavaria!

Lovely shot- the clouds are so perfect and plump. I’ve worn a dry suit before and they left me feeling so weird afterwards, much warmer than a wet suit, but I didn’t like it as much. and 12C… you are braver than me!

Awesome beauty! I can keep starring at it all day 🙂

Really impressed that you have a dry suit certificate – I wouldn’t dare, though the lake looks so tempting.

I agree – Mountain lakes are better to be seen from outside the water!

The Tyrol region of Austria and Italy is my #1 favorite place in the world! Cool photo!

Gorgeous photo, Laurel. Recollections of our home town alpine lakes. So, did you get your dry suit certification?

Sure beats where I got tested for my scuba certification – Lake Ontario on the day the ice left. Looks like a beautiful area.

Oh I do enjoy the Alpine lakes of Austria! They are so beautiful and serene. Great picture but I think I’ll stick to above water adventures 🙂

Great pic, Laurel. I love the dark spots inset on bright clouds. The llake looks so beautiful and peaceful, too.

    Thanks for your comments everyone.
@Jade – I only did it twice and decided that was enough 🙂
@Barry – Yep, it only took two dives, so was easy to get.
@Leigh – Brrrr, sounds way too cold for me!

Beautiful photo Laurel. That looks just like our type of trekking ground! Similar to the Lake District in the UK but I bet those peaks are higher.

That looks like it would really fun to canoe in or hike around. Cold water diving sounds uncomfortable!

Gorgeous shot Laurel. I’m with you on the cold water…………..brrrr. I’d stay above too.

Thanks so much for posting to Travel Photo Thursday.

Beautiful shot! I love the depth of field and the reflection of the clouds in the lake. I don’t think I’d ever even consider scuba diving in a freezing cold lake though 😉

Dry Suit Diving, I’ve heard about that. I’ve only done the wet suit kind for now. I prefer the warmer waters!

Beautiful photo, Laurel! I’m a sucker for reflection shots, especially with clouds.

Next time someone tells me to go jump in a lake, I’ll know which one to avoid. Pretty, but cold!!

Always been curious about diving in a lake. How was the visibility?

    Thanks for your comments everyone.
@Jeremy – I love Tyrol too, it’s great for outdoor activities and is such a beautiful region.
@Scott – I think I’m definitely more of a warm water diver, but was glad to have tried it.
@Matthew – Only a few meters, but I’ve heard that it can be better in the Plansee, depending on the day that you go.

I first saw the picture and thought, “Yeah! I want to jump right in there!” and then I saw the temperature… Maybe not!

    Beautiful photo!

So many lakes in Austria – I’ve researched a lot of them to visit, but haven’t heard of Plansee – danke schön for the info!

I love the way you have taken this photo – it really gives a sense of depth. Almost like I could climb into the photo and walk for miles. That lake sounds cold. Problem with with dry suit – your face is still exposed. Very cold – making me shiver just thinking about it!
